There’s the ScanSnap, the scanner that I have been using since 2008, and there was their main rival (at least from my perspective), the Neat line of scanners. The Seagate Backup Plus Desktop is an excellent alternative to its little. Boostnote launches its main interface on start. In the consumer paperless space, there were two main players for going paperless. Boostnote was previously available for Android and iOS as well but the developers decided to pause mobile development to focus on the desktop version first. Downloads are provided for Windows, Mac and Linux devices, and the installation on Windows holds no surprises. We use Neat for keeping track of receipts, invoices, billing, and incoming packing slips. Looks interesting, but not exactly for us. Not Nest, as in the wifi enabled thermostat NetworkNerd: Took a quick look at Evernote Business. Aaron: Neat, as in the receipt scanner software.
2018 Alternatives To Neat Desktop For Home Use Update This PostI don’t see any details of additional Neat integration with ScanSnap Manager, but I’ll update this post if I find that out.Have any of you bought or tried the new Neat bundled ScanSnap? How is it working for you? What do you think of this development? It will be interesting to see what happens with rest of ScanSnap’s software, especially when it comes to processing receipts which has always been a weak point.Wow…. Hopefully, it isn’t a sign that ScanSnap will be getting rid of their own receipt software and moving to Neat, because the reviews of the Neat web-based software have not been glowing, at least among DocumentSnap readers.Since Neat is a subscription web-based platform, if you buy that bundle you’ll get a 1-year license to Neat Premium. What a time to be alive.I am not sure what this means for ScanSnap Receipt. Key mac adware cleanerFirst, they jettisoned the local software application residing on your computer in favour of a web-based interface and “cloud storage” (the big new thing at the time). Enter the complete revamping of their software and business model around 2015 presumably to juice more profits out of their now dependent user base. The quirks worked around some of Neat’s limitations but the application had enough flexibility to customize it just fine. Over the course of almost 10 years, I came to rely on it and had built up a vast archive of digitized receipts and records, all organized in my own quirky way which made perfect sense to me. Not just that, the complaints are almost all the same as mine.Neat WAS great software. Is Neat by any chance owned by Apple? Then there’s Neat’s “support” system. A system I had counted on to easily and quickly access digitized records in the event of a future tax audit became useless. Worst of all, my entire records keeping system imploded on itself after Neat quickly stopped providing support or updates to its legacy software in order to drive people to their new much more expensive subscription model. Reports could not be customized, data could not be displayed how it had been for years. All of a sudden things one could do in the past could not be done. Anyway, none of it worked. Getting them back to you again was a herculean time-wasting task. Twice someone said something like “here do this, this, and this… OK?” and then just hung up on me before I could even answer or try their “solution”. Unknowledgable, surly, in every single time in a huge hurry to get off the call as fast as possible. I looked at a lot of alternatives, but wanted a system that stored docs in the filesystem, not in a proprietary cloud or database.I’m very happy with the system I use today. I realized that I needed a document storage system that was software manufacturer agnostic. This was a wake up call for me. Then Neat stopped supporting their installed software on the Mac and ultimately moved to the cloud. I started using it on a PC and then migrated to the Mac. Gods of the digitized paperless universe? Please don’t let Neat get their mitts on Scansnap….I was an early adopter of Neat back in 2007 and used it for many years. Open iphone emulator macIt was worth the effort to untie my document archive from the changing fortune of Neat.I recommend avoiding any archive system that limits your ability to find old files to a single company’s software or system, especially a primary, cloud based archive. It just works…I spent a week creating rules wth Hazel to export all my old Neat documents and rename them based on keywords inside the PDF files preparing to import them into Eaglefiler. For 90 % of my scanning I have pre-defined, automated rules in Hazel that rename, redate, tag, import, then refresh the Eaglefiler display and delete the original scanned file.
